Dark Priest extra art 2

A Dark Priest praying to the Fallen God via sex.

Gods, also known as higher divinities, are the most powerful beings in the Monster Girl Encyclopedia world [1]. At least some of them existed before the world itself, and were responsible for its creation [2] and all the living things within it.

Summary

The "classical" white-wings-and-angelic-choirs gods reside in Heaven, a spirit realm dimension above the clouds which is inaccessible to mortals and monsters[3]. Here the higher divinities dwell in vast palaces, while the "lesser divinities", such as angels and valkyries, live in castle towns serving their patron deity. These are the gods worshiped by the Order, with the Chief God exalted highest among them.

Aside from Heaven, some gods occupy their own relevant area of influence, e.g. Poseidon under the sea, or the Fallen God in her own dimension of absolute depravity, Pandemonium. Where Ares and Eros make their lairs is not clear. Each of the gods have their own interests, and not all follow the ultra-anti-monster policy set by the Chief God. The Fallen God and Poseidon are in open rebellion as monsterized beings themselves, and while Ares and Eros both nominally toe the party line, they both grant boons to humans and monsters who adhere to their teachings. Exactly where the cat-goddess Bastet sits in the celestial sphere isn't clear, but she has some human adherents as well as the affection of many feline monster girls.

The divinities are distinguished by having "vastly more power than the average human or monster" [4], but humans (and monsters) still sometimes end up worshiping things that actually aren't gods, even though they have real ones to pick from. The nation of Zipangu seems especially prone to this heresy, with ryu and inari cults and their respective shirohebi and kitsune-tsuki attendants. Which is not to say other regions don't commit similar errors; both snake cultism and the Elemental Faith consider certain powerful (but ultimately non-divine) creatures to be gods [5]. The one (formerly) mortal creature that actually has enough power and metaphysical clout [6] to potentially be considered on the same level as the higher divinities - the Demon Lord - apparently isn't worshiped by anyone. Either the Fallen God or the non-theistic Sabbath serve instead for most monster girls' religious needs.

The mutability of the gods in the Monster Girl Encyclopedia world is an open question. At the very least they can be monsterized or prove conspicuous by their absence, but actual clear-cut births or deaths remain shrouded in mystery [7].

List of Gods

This list just includes entities that really are gods; excluding, as mentioned above, those (usually Zipanguan) mamono who might entertain some worshippers.
  • The First Chief God - Creator of the Universe. Original Chief Deity. Allegiance and whereabouts unknown.
  • The Current Chief God - Current Chief Deity. Worshiped by the Order of the Chief God. Vehemently Anti-Monster.
  • The Fallen God - The monsterized Deity that rules over the Spirit Realm of Pandemonium. Sided with Demon Lord after monsterization. Original domain and allegiance not known. Actively encourages the monsterization of humans. Worshiped by the Dark Priests, Dark Angels, and Dark Valkyries.
  • Poseidon - God of the Sea. Initially aligned with Heaven, but has since sided with the Demon Lord after becoming monsterized. Sea Bishops are granted power by Poseidon, allowing those at risk for drowning the ability to breath underwater.
  • Ares - God of War and Fighting. Decidedly neutral, but known to give boons to her worshipers in battle. Her worshippers include humans and various monster races.
  • Eros - God of Love. Decidedly neutral, but known to reward mortals who perform good deeds with one of her many servants. Said servants include Houri's, Cupids, Gandharva's and Apsara's.
  • Bastet - God of Cats. Presides over the Cat Spirit Realm. Monsterized and sides with the Demon Lord.
  • Bacchus - God of Alcohol. Neutral and worshiped by humans and various monster races. Satyros in particular are devoted.

List of Faiths

  • The Order of the Chief God - The largest and most mainstream of religions amongst Humans and non-monster races. It is headquartered in a large nation sharing its name, headed by a Pope. It espouses that there are multiple Gods, but the Chief God is prime among them, but there are several sects within it dedicated to Gods other than the Chief God. Some Gods have been rejected from the pantheon due to siding with Monsters in the ongoing conflict, others who are more neutral granting blessings to Humans as well as Monsters are tolerated, though viewed with suspicion. It considers Monsters to be inherently evil and, though exceptions for especially peaceful Monsters are made, and the anti-monster fervor varies from Kingdom to Kingdom. Most Angels follow the Gods of this pantheon. Worship of Gods who have been Monsterized is considered heretical.
  • The Fallen Faith - The faith surrounding the Fallen God who resides in Pandemonium, their worshipers focus on the corruption of the pure into hedonistic indulgence, prime among the adherents are Dark Angels and Dark Priests. Adherents often perform 'missionary' work converting others to the faith and corrupting them, but upon obtaining a partner they like these duties cease. Many worshipers will make a pilgrimage to Pandemonium with their partner to experience never ending pleasure.
  • Elementalism - A faith worshipping various elementals, and exalts those with close ties with Elementals such as Trolls. It is unkown how the faith is tolerated in Order lands, but it is split between two factions, those who believe that monsterized Elementals are a natural evolution for Elementals and should be exalted, and those who believe that monsterized Elementals have been corrupted.
  • Snake Cultism - A monster worshipping faith considered a heresy by the Order which exalts serpentine Monsters, and apparantly has a Snake God at its head, though this may be just a term for Echidna's. Its adherents use various rituals to turn Human women into members of the Lamia family.
  • Ryu Worship - Ryu native to the Zipangu region are often worshiped as Water Gods for their ability to control the weather and call rain. Men are gifted to them as Husbands who they Ryu use to gather enough Spirit Energy to call the rain when needed. The Ryu are attended by Shirohebi.
  • Kitsune Worship - Inari are often worshiped in shrines in Zipangu. Occasionally the Inari will produce Kitsune-Bi and turn their Shrine Maidens into Kitsune-tsuki.

Divinities (MGE1, p211)

A general name for the gods, with the chief god who is said to have created the world at the top. Beings that rule the world and humans from heaven, and spread their own teachings to humans through The Order. They also sometimes given humans instructions directly as oracles. Heaven is a hierarchical society. There's a huge division between the greater divinities, who are the gods, and the lesser divinities, who are angels. Furthermore, the gods and angels themselves are divided into many different classes. Even the lowest among the lesser divinities who are Angels, posses vastly more power than the average human or monster. Speaking of the power of the higher angels and gods, it is even more tremendous.

The Chief God According to The Order (MGE1)

It is the omnipotent and omniscient creator god who gave birth to humans and subdued many of the other gods. The chief god is gently watching over humans. Sometimes it extends a hand to steer humans in the right direction. As of the present, the wicked demon lord who emerged from the darkness is working from the shadows to destroy humans, the servants of the chief god. In order to protect humans from the demon lord, humans are being divinely protected through God's power and given the power of “heroes.” From time to time, it dispatches lesser divinities to The Order, bestows great power and blessings to the knights and heroes, and joins them in the fight against the monsters.

The Truth (MGE1)

As far as I know about the truth of this world, the teachings of The Order seem to include a lot of falsehoods. From here on, I'm going to introduce a story that goes to the heart of this world. First off, it's true that the chief god created the world and humans. But the demon lord and the monsters were included as part of the “world” that the chief god created. Saying that the demon lord is a being who emerged from the darkness is a huge lie on the part of the gods and The Order. Monsters are, in essence, beings that are higher on the food chain than humans. They're living creatures the chief god created so that it could adjust the number of humans. The demon lord who The Order insists is wicked, was created as a control device so that the gods could control the monsters. As in the present, the demon lord's demonic energy has always been linked with all monsters. By giving the demon lord directives, the chief god is able to indirectly control the monsters. Whenever civilization flourishes, and humans increase too much in number, it turns the monsters vicious as in the age of the former demon lord, killing large amounts of humans, thereby thinning their numbers. And then, when humans start to die out, this time the monsters increase too much in number, so this time it gives humans incredible power, creating “heroes,” and sending them to slay the demon lord. After the demon lord is slain, the monsters kill each other to decide the next demon lord, and until a demon lord is decided, their number keeps decreasing on its own. And then, when humans reach prosperity once again, and begin increasing in number, a new demon lord is born as a control device from amongst the monsters.

And then, the entire process repeats itself. This is the world's system. The system was running perfectly until a certain succubus became demon lord and caused the system to start malfunctioning. The demon lord used her demonic power which is linked to all monsters to start overwriting the traits instilled in the monsters from the time when God created them: “Monsters are beings that are higher existences than humans, and monsters are beings that live by eating humans.”

Naturally, the chief god was furious. She tried to eliminate the demon lord. She gave the power to slay the demon lord to a hero according to the system at the time, but since the hero betrayed the chief god and went on the side of the demon lord, the attempt at eliminating the demon lord ended in failure. The strongest of the monsters, the demon lord, and the strongest of humanity, the hero, joined hands to create a new world together. The demon lord who is a succubus, and the hero who was made an incubus by their hands, can increase each other's power infinitely by continuously having sex due to their nature. Their power has already reached the level of a god, and not even the chief god was able to destroy them. The chief god was gravely wounded in the battle, and as of the present, she can't move freely, so she's manipulating humans into doing her bidding through the church, giving many humans the power of a “hero,” and frequently sending extermination squads at the demon lord.

So all that is the truth of this world. It's already a myth level story. It doesn't feel real to me either. If The Order knew I had written something like this, I bet I'd probably be executed immediately. Whether or not this nonsense of mine is to be believed is up to you who have taken the book in hand. On the same occasion, I was able to ask the demon lord herself about her future vision for this world that she's trying to change, so I'll summarize it later on.

For those of you who wonder whether this story is true, the demon lord and hero are both alive and well. Go visit the demon realm and ask them directly yourself. That is, if you're confident that you won't get caught by monsters along the way.

The Other Gods (MGE1)

Now let's get back on course after that crazy story from before. There are many other beings called gods besides just the chief god. The chief god is trying to fix the system that the demon lord threw out of whack, but it seems not all of the gods think that way.

“The Fallen God” was consumed by devilish pleasure, corrupted, and changed into a monster while still possessing the power of a god. For the sake of the denizens of the sea whom she loved, “Poseidon, God of the Sea” joined them and went on the demon lord's side. The alliances of the gods are never fixed and unchanging. Presently, the demon lord has several divinities as allies. The chief god is in a position where it's getting harder and harder to strike at the demon lord.

  6. Early settings info, The Demon Lord: "The one who presently rules over the monsters is a kind of succubus who possesses extremely strong power even rivaling that of a god."
  7. In a Q&A Kenkou Cross commented at least on the birth of demi-gods: "It's possible for a male human and female goddess to breed. The resulting demigod child is more godlike than human and has power comparable to gods. While Demigods can be weaker than gods, some can have abilities gods normally don't have."
